Description

Harvard University’s Office of the University CIO (UCIO) is seeking a skilled Production Designer to be part of iCommons (http://www.icommons.harvard.edu), a software team that provides web-based tools and services that enhance the student experience and teaching and learning across the university. These tools include a platform for providing and managing access to academic resources, as well as various modular components that provide for the authoring and delivery of academic content.

This person must have demonstrated experience working hands-on in HTML/CSS mark-up, be adept in designing with web standards/best practices, and have an instinct for presentation design. In addition to coding user interfaces, this person will collaborate with the technical team, advise university organizations on design projects that make use of iCommons tools, generate design standards documentation, and have a focus on design for usability and accessibility.

Bachelor’s degree required. Must have a design background with 3+ years of relevant experience. Must have demonstrated experience in client-side development and working closely with technical staff. Must possess a strong knowledge of web UI implementation with an emphasis on web standards (XHTML, CSS, DOM Scripting) and accessibility (Section 508, WCAG). Must be experienced in addressing cross-browser/-platform issues, and implementing workarounds. Must be fluent in Photoshop and Illustrator (or equivalents).

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to complete assignments promptly and accurately; good communication skills are essential. This position requires the ability to work independently or as part of a creative team. Experience with online learning tools is a plus.

We are looking for a Lead UI Designer to join our team and lead all aspects of design for web, mobile and all other areas of design for our new bay area news startup. We need someone who is well versed in usability, information architecture, and understands how to plan and build for large amounts of dynamic content. The right person is an expert with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash, and can work from the very beginning, developing wireframes all the way through complete designs.

Responsibilities:

  • Be creative.

  • Create wireframes for information architecture and workflow development

  • Create complete, finished designs through to web ready graphics and beyond into HTML and CSS code.

  • Collaborate with the developers to help drive innovation and challenge the bounds of what’s possible.

  • Take ownership and drive projects to conclusion.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Minimum 5 years web design experience

  • Experience working under intense deadlines

  • Expert at Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash

  • Usability and UX understanding and the ability to turn that vision into reality.

  • Hand code HTML and CSS

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • JavaScript experience a huge plus

  • Has a strong interest in Interface Design as it applies to both devices and websites;
  • Likes to work in a beautiful office with other nice designers;
  • Does not like to go pick up coffee, but likes to drink it;
  • Is still enrolled as a graphic design / visual communication student or a recent grad, looking to pick up more experience on some fun jobs;
  • Does not like to work for free;

Requirements: Must know what the hell you are doing and have a passion for UI and graphic design.

1. Do not send me your resumes. I don’t care where you’ve worked or need to check your speeling.

2. Do send me links to live sites you’ve worked on along with your story about the UI challenges you overcame with your design.

3. Do use my drop box to send actual PSDs of your work with layers intact along with the original wire frames if available. Student work is okay. Don’t worry, I will not save the PSDs past making this decision. I just want to see your work (like in math class) and make sure you have proper tools.

4. Once you’ve sent a PSD, yes, do send me a link to your online portfolio. Make sure it has Web UI examples in it!

5. Do have enough bandwidth for a crap ton of work (several interfaces a week) From now and through April.

I currently have five available contract opportunities for a client in Huntington Beach. All five opportunities are six-month contracts beginning April 1, with the possibility of going an additional 6 months (and possibly even permanent). The client is looking to bring on one person from each of the three descriptions below, plus an additional two generalists who have experience in all three skill sets (but perhaps are not gurus).

1. JavaScript guru (3-5+ years) to help in the design and creation of a rich UI web application with back-end data connectivity, including the integration of third-party service APIs. The candidate should have experience with script.aculo.us, AJAX, and Prototype libraries; shopping cart application experience desired.

2. ActionScript/Flex/Flash guru (3-5+ years) to help in the design and creation of a rich UI web application with back-end data connectivity, including the integration of third-party service APIs. The candidate should have experience with object-oriented programming in ActionScript.

3. C# .NET/PostrgreSQL guru (5-8 years) with experience building a shopping cart web application and/or working knowledge of PDF modification with Linux-based Postscript.
