Netflix – Sr Web User Interface Engineer – TV & Web Site Exp – 3606 (los gatos)

For years the standard Netflix user experience has been confined to desktop browsers. Over the last couple of years we have expanded rapidly from the laptop to the living room as our streaming services have blossomed on numerous set top boxes and televisions. Initially the TV experiences have been defined by our consumer electronics partners. This is changing as web technologies meet the living room. What this means is developing the Netflix user experience spans the desktop, the living room and other devices in the future. The common denominator is developing the user interface in web technologies that is easy to A/B test.

POSITION

In the position of Sr. Web User Interface Engineer you will be responsible for the presentation code that brings to life the Netflix user experience (across different device experiences). As part of the highly respected UI Engineering team you will partner with the UX design team and the Product Management team to take mere wireframes & design specs and turn them into reality using HTML/CSS/JavaScript/JSP/Java technologies. In other companies this role is often called front end developer or web developer. At Netflix, we call this out as a true engineering discipline that focuses solely on the user interface.

SKILLS

Because the user interface engineer works closely with the UX design team and the product management team you will need to have strong verbal & written communication, good estimation skills, and a clear attention to user experience details. You must have a very strong understanding of cross-browser issues, know how to quickly layout pages in the browser, be able to tame CSS, understand the good parts in JavaScript, be a proponent for clean semantic markup and have solid computer science skills (in particular simple design, separation of concerns).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with the UX design team to iterate designs into living presentation code
Work closely with the product management team to define realistic schedules
Rapidly prototype experiences for usability testing
Build scalable, cleanly architected production code for the Netflix experience
Implement solutions in DHMTL & Java/JSP that support a rich A/B testing environment

QUALIFICATIONS

Expert-level knowledge of DHTML (JavaScript, Ajax, HTML, CSS)
Expert-level experience in building web applications using the latest standards-based approaches
Solid experience with at least one Ajax/Javascript framework
Solid knowledge of JSP, Java, and Java Servlets (or similar generation technologies)
Experience with jQuery, Struts, Tiles, Spring, Hibernate a plus (but not required)
Good sense of what is required of a great user interface
Excellent verbal and written communications
Ability to work seamlessly in a team development environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

BS or MS degree in Computer science or equivalent
5+ years software engineering experience
4+ years professional web development experience
3+ years professional frontend development experience
