Android App Development Project (Austin)

Have java development skills and looking to build experience in Android development?

We are looking for someone to develop an Android application that scans 2D barcodes (QR codes). There is an open source project (http:// code.google.com/p/zxing/ ) that contains the required image analysis, video camera API code for the barcode scanning.

We have a detailed spec and mockup, and the graphics/icons are all developed and ready to go.

We already have an iPhone app, and if you have access to an iPhone, download the “QikTag” app to see what the final product should look like.

The app is a hybrid, most of the functionality will provided by an embedded web browser that pulls in pages from the server, reducing platform specific code.

This is a paid (upon completion) project, although likely below market rates for an experienced Android developer.

Contact me if this sounds like a fun project. You can check out our website at http://www.pervasivetags.com

Lead Software Engineer (San Francisco, CA)

About Us:

  • Twilio is a simple, pay-as-you-go web service that empowers developers to build voice and SMS applications.
  • 11,000+ developers use Twilio – including start ups, Fortune 100 companies, and both major political parties.
  • We are funded by top tier investors, have a great team and revenues are growing FAST.
  • Twilio is disrupting the $1.3 trillion telecom market. Come help us ruffle the suits – we’re just getting started.

About the Job:

  • You’re the architect and lead engineer of amazing applications, such as OpenVBX, built using Twilio APIs. You’ll be a key technical contributor and leader a team of engineers.
  • Write clean, re-usable code, and establish team code review processes to ensure others on the team do the same. Your team must produce simple, elegant code because it will be read by and used by thousands of developers around the world.
  • You’ll work with the founders and Product Management to build the right products, and get them to the right market. You’ll help to scope projects and milestones into appropriate amounts of work, in aggressive but reasonable timeframes, and drive your team towards successful deliveries.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and author fast-rendering, reusable components using technologies like jQuery, PHP, Python, and HTML/CSS.
  • Collaborate across the company and interact with our customers (software engineers) to define, design and ship new stuff.
  • Write maintainable code with extensive test coverage in a professional software engineering environment (with source control, dev/stage/prod release cycle, continuous deployment).
  • Improve the skills of everyone around you through discussion, debate, coaching and review.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 8 years of coding experience (school counts), 15+ yrs is fine too, what matters is that you have experience working on both the server side (PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, node.js) and the client side (jQuery, HTML, CSS, etc.).
  • You still code, and still love it. But you also love growing throughput by mentoring a team of more junior engineers.
  • Opinions and “technical taste” about languages, frameworks and tools based on hands on experience, not other people’s blog posts.
  • Your core skill is not cutting and pasting code – or merely using libraries. You’ve built and maybe opensourced libraries and have written code that other people use.
  • You love to make an impact and thrive in small, collaborative, energetic teams.
  • You communicate well out loud, on paper and in code. Code is a creative expression for you.

Bonus Points:

  • You’ve made a substantial contribution to a widely used open source project. Huge bonus points if you started or lead a project.
  • You’re celebrating the current Javascript renaissance, because JS has been so misunderstood all these years.
  • You’ve built and scaled a web application and are pedantic about performance
  • You read up on and experiment with new technologies because it’s in your nature, not because it’s a job requirement. You don’t just learn how things work, you learn why.
  • Formal training in computer science (bachelors, masters, vulcan mind-meld, whatever)

Perks:

  • Generous Stock Options.
  • Full insurance benefits: Medical, Dental, & Vision.
  • Macs, two if you need ‘em. Big ‘ol monitors.
  • Meritocracy! We reward the awesome.

How to apply:

  • Applications without cover letters will not be considered. We need people who can communicate in code and in English.
  • Want to stand out? Sign up and build an app using the Twilio API. Include a link to it in your cover letter. Bonus points for pointing out bugs or things that annoy you/could be better on the platform.
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer. We will not sponsor visas, nor will we hire consultants through sub-contractors that hold your visa.
