The Stanford Department of Genetics is seeking an outstanding software developer to work with a team of biologists to create a system for the discovery of genes of interest, using prior bioinformatics-based knowledge about gene properties. The Research Software Developer will work with project staff to facilitate and design appropriate development, test, and production system and environments based on the needs of scientists at the School within the Cohen Laboratory. This position will create reusable modular programming structure utilizing object-oriented principles. She/he will collaborate and communicate with researchers, educators, and other technical staff within the department and laboratory. This project requires methodologies to determine sequence homologies and predict biological functions. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to allow the individual to interact with team members and collaborators effectively. Strong organizational skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment, while seeking and accepting guidance and direction from supervisors and team members.

Required Qualifications:

• B.S. in Bioinformatics or Computer Science or a related field with at least 3 years of related experience.

• Bioinformatics/biostatistics knowledge that includes knowledge of classification algorithms and phylogenetic, comparative genomics tools.

You will take responsibility for delivering new features and bug fixes in our existing titles, as well as large components of entirely new titles. You will work side-by-side with a team of seasoned HTML developers, User Experience designers, Java Engineers and a growing mobile team at Citysearch. We pride ourselves on the quality of our products, both at the high level of what the user sees, as well as the professionalism of the code that builds that end-user experience.

You¡¦ll enjoy significant leadership in identifying requirements and designing solutions, collaborating with the rest of the design and engineering staff. We enjoy working on big new products and features, but also take pleasure in polishing and fixing bugs in existing software. This position reports to our Director of Mobile.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Responsibilities:

„X Participating in our weekly process, based on Scrum methodology, which includes setting goals, working towards completing them in 2 week dev cycles, keeping the team apprised of your progress, and showcasing what you¡¦ve built at week¡¦s end.

„X Working on features in our Android applications, which could include any number of cool things to do with location, social networks (ours and 3rd party networks like Twitter and Facebook), new web services (internal and external), incorporation of user-generated content, tying our client code to critical server-side functionality, and just about anything else you can think of to do with the native Android SDK.

„X Proactively working to architect and refactor code/design for optimal maintainability, extensibility and re-usability.

„X Work with internal business teams to define requirements and develop technical specifications.

„X Architect software solutions and determine current limitations and compatibilities between subsystems, selection of new concepts and methodology, and development of major routines and utilities.

„X Communicate effectively to ensure that all business requirements are being assessed and addressed to ensure development projects meet or exceed performance targets.

„X Drive full life cycle product development.

„X Collaborate with business owners to solidify requirements.

„X Instill best practices for software development and documentation and assure designs meet requirements, deliver high quality work on tight schedules.

Education and Experience:

„X 1+ year(s) of Android development experience
„X 3+ years Fundamental Java skills (Java 5+).

„X Published at least one application in the Android Market.

„X Use of Test-Driven development methodologies with strong understanding of OOD and OOP.

„X Strong technical and design skills and the ability to learn new technologies quickly

„X B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related engineering or technical field preferred, but not required.

„X Solid coding practices including good design documentation, unit testing, peer code-reviews, and a preference for agile methods

„X Passion for mobile and your products – you¡¦ll be writing code that will be shipped in a matter of weeks to millions of people.
„X Strong grasp of algorithms and data structures

„X Passionate about Internet and mobile services and application technologies.
