Summary:

- Flexibility to pick up other languages, such as Java , is a plus. Our attitude is to pick the right tool for the job and do a superb cross language integration (we use Thrift for that matter).
- Be comfortable in an environment where we encourage frequent releases (weekly, at least) and constant iteration of the product.

The ideal candidate should think of herself/himself as a startup minded engineer ready to take ownership and make large, immediate contributions. You can truly think through the product and help in product decisions, design pretty and smart interfaces and are capable of tackling anything else that might come up. You will be required to be autonomous and not require much oversight. Over time, your role can quickly evolve into leadership as you own more of the front end.

Since we still have some Perl legacy on the front end, there will be some tasks for moving the code over to the new ruby platform.

The Stanford Department of Genetics is seeking a software developer with background in and knowledge of bioinformatics to work with a team of biologists investigating bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The person will work with project staff to utilize the existing J2EE/Oracle programming environment to create algorithms that will help determine phylogenetic relationships between genes. S/he will be expected to independently develop, write and test these algorithms and to help evaluate results obtained through application of the algorithms. Specifically, the project will investigate evolutionary relationships among antibiotic resistance genes expressed in different microorganisms.

It requires knowledge of genomics and biostatistical methodologies sufficient to determine relationships among sequences in DNA and in proteins and to correlate gene sequences, gene expression data, and other functional data. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary to allow the individual to interact with team members and collaborators effectively. Also required are strong organizational skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment.

Required Qualifications:

B.S. in Bioinformatics or Computer Science or a related field with at least 3 years of related experience.

Bioinformatics/biostatistics knowledge that includes knowledge of classification algorithms and phylogenetic, comparative genomics tools.
Experience with Java, J2EE, servlets, Java Server Pages, JDBC, Jakarta Tomcat, and CVS
Knowledge of one or more scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python and/or Ruby).

Desired Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Responsibilities:

Participating in our weekly process, based on Scrum methodology, which includes setting goals, working towards completing them in 2 week dev cycles, keeping the team apprised of your progress, and showcasing what youve built at weeks end.

Communicate effectively to ensure that all business requirements are being assessed and addressed to ensure development projects meet or exceed performance targets.

Collaborate with business owners to solidify requirements.
Instill best practices for software development and documentation and assure designs meet requirements, deliver high quality work on tight schedules.

Education and Experience:

1+ year(s) of Android development experience
3-5 years fundamental Java skills.
Published at least one application in the Android Market.
Use of Test-Driven development methodologies with strong understanding of OOD and OOP.
Strong technical and design skills and the ability to learn new technologies quickly.
B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related engineering or technical field preferred, but not required.
Solid coding practices including good design documentation, unit testing, peer code-reviews, and a preference for agile methods.
Passion for mobile and your products – youll be writing code that will be shipped in a matter of weeks to millions of people.
Strong grasp of algorithms and data structures
Passionate about Internet and mobile services and application technologies.
