Senior Java Web Application Engineer (palo alto)

Server Side Expert / Application Engineer to join our small tight-knit team and help extend our powerful and successful online research products.

The Company:
If you’ve used Google Scholar or Amazon’s “Look inside the book”…we do it better. Way better.

ebrary is a successful content distribution and technology company with significant market presence worldwide. We deliver documents securely and efficiently over the Internet. With our technology, educational institutions all over the world are providing student access to an ever-growing distributed library of content, at fraction of the cost of acquiring and maintaining physical documents. We are growing, and expanding into new markets carefully. Part of that planned growth includes adding key technical contributors.

We’re 9 years old, and privately held. You can learn more about us at http://www.ebrary.com

The Position:

We seek highly a highly experienced senior engineer to join us in careful evolution of our application architecture, to broaden our reach into new markets. Our services support complex content aggregation, sophisticated business models, streaming document delivery, and unique user interaction.

This is a hands-on position, requiring both senior design and coding skills and strong technical communications.

To be considered a qualified candidate, you must have at least 5 years significant experience as a software engineer in a formal product development environment. You must have implemented successful solutions to a wide variety of challenges in architecture, design and coding, functionality and usability, and optimization.

We require that you be able to demonstrate experience in advanced Java application development, well beyond the construction of simple servlets and jsp’s. We will look particularly closely for experience and skill in the following areas. Yes, we realize this is a broad range. What we’re looking for is demonstrated depth in some of them:
Developing large, complex web-based distributed applications, with Java technologies
Application Framework Design, and general familiarity with SaaS models
Experience with AJAX / DHTML
Suitability for generalizing schemas and application logic, to support multiple application requirements
Application performance tuning
Well-versed with standard Java web application frameworks such as Struts, Spring MVC, or Wicket.

This is not simply a J2EE position. And, we expect you to provide specific reference to:

Well developed debugging and analytic skills
Writing skills for both specification development, team communication, and technical planning for complex deployments
Working in a team, with large volumes of code, multiple branches, formal integration and test cycles
Use of sophisticated development environments (Eclipse, NetBeans), code management tools, and wiki-based communication

The Situation:

We are a small team, tight knit, working together for 9+ years, with good history and of course the usual quirks. We are experienced enough to know that every incremental addition to a team changes the balance and effectiveness of that team. Therefore this is indeed a hands-on, individual contributor position at a senior level, yet a strong ethos for teamwork is required.

Contract, or Full Time Permanent Employment:

Ideally, we wish to attract and integrate a full-time, fully committed new team member, to help us grow both our product and our culture. It may be that your skills and strengths are sufficient for us to consider an ongoing contract. Certainly we will consider a contract-to-hire arrangement that suits both parties.
This is a full time position in our Palo Alto office and our regular-employee benefits include medical, dental, vision, paid personal time off, 401k, and pre-IPO stock options.

The Instructions:
Please respond with direct reference to the position requirements we describe above. Certainly you can refer to your resume, but we will appreciate specific citations to help us understand how you might make a good match for our team!

Thanks sincerely,

The ebrary Engineering Team
