Web Developer Science of Marine Reserves Project

Position Summary: The Contractor will serve as the Web Developer for the European Marine Reserve Science Project coordinated by the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). This is a personal contract position funded by Natural England. The Web Developer will organize, implement, and maintain the web-based tools for a European version of the second edition of The Science of Marine Reserves booklet, which will include interactive data visualization tools for the European case studies and other regional information. This will require working with the PISCO Science of Marine Reserves design team to develop new interactive graphic elements for the Google Earth MPA Layer as well as the European Science of Marine Reserves content to be hosted on IUCN WCPAs Protect Planet Ocean site (http://www.protectplanetocean.org/). These tools will be executed using new Rich Internet Application (RIA) technologies such as Flex, Ajax, and Google Earth mapping tools. The Web Developer will also be responsible for maintaining and trouble-shooting existing Science of Marine Reserves data visualization tools currently hosted online at the Protect Planet Ocean site and at www.piscoweb.org/outreach/pubs/reserves. The Web Developer will work remotely with a team of individuals located at Oregon State University and University of California, Santa Barbara.

Specific deliverables:

Develop Google Earth animations using marine reserve data as in the following examples: http://sites.google.com/site/underbluewaters/smr-tour.kmz?attredirects=0

Work with online content hosting firm to add four case studies to those located at http://www.protectplanetocean.org/somr/CaseStudiesHome.html

Required Programming Experience: The Appointee will have extensive experience working with the following programs: Flex, Ajax, Adobe Flash, KML programming, and Google Earth tools including Google Earth API. Should be familiar with Google Fusion Tables, Google Map Data API, and Google Visualization API.

Additional job-related skills and abilities: Ability to work well in partnerships, including as part of a physically dispersed team. Must be organized and demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with multiple partners and efforts; must demonstrate initiative and be able to work both independently and as a member of a team. Familiarity with marine ecosystems is preferred but not essential.

Contract specifics: To begin immediately, the position involves producing deliverables at agreed-upon stages, with completion of all work by February 2011. Compensation for the contracted work is $15,000.

Responsibilities

Work directly with WestEd’s STEM staff to gain a strong understanding of the problem domain, to analyze and propose innovative solutions and best approaches, and to build and iteratively refine the applications.
Work closely with other backend application and database programmers, helping to design the architectural infrastructure for passing data between the learning management system and the flash applications.
Work with non-technical (project managers) & technical teams (including web developers & software developers) to define future enhancements & features.
Create prototypes, style guide components, and technical specifications in addition to the final live Flash applications.
Troubleshoot and debug all Flash applications and modules.
Help recruit, mentor and supervise junior developers.
Work with quality assurance contractors to assist them in the design and implementation of test cases and automated testing.

Qualifications

4+ years development experience with expertise in solid ActionScript-driven robust Flash interaction applications with XML-type data source and scripted animation techniques (Required).
Java, Java/Flash bridging, CPU/Memory optimization, and cross platform and browser compatibility experience (Required).
Proven experience developing rich internet applications.
Database design and MySQL experience highly desirable.

Integrated Math-Science Instructor (IMSI) (Irving & Broadway)

Purpose

Teach a range of integrated mathematics and science courses that are contextualized historically and ecologically, and that represent a range of discoveries, innovations, and societal shifts. Courses must challenge students to reconsider what they believe they know about math and science in particular and the world in general. Specifically, the IMSI is expected to help communicate mathematics and science as living and evolving languages for and perspectives on building civilizations infrastructures. Connections will be made between the classroom, the city of Chicago, and the world at large.

Responsibilities/Duties

IMSI areas of responsibility directly reflect the GCE Community Fabric (http://www.globalcitizenshipexperience.com/GCE-fabric.html), with specific duties related to the students, to the school, and to the community of partners. The student focus is developed through the creation and delivery of integrated math-science curriculum. The school focus is developed through the mc3 project, standing for Media Cross-Curricular Communication. The partner focus is cultivated by the Chicago Global Village project, a series of field experience activities throughout Chicago.

Time & Place

This is a full-time position, following the annual and weekly calendars of GCE activities. Work begins August 2, 2010 and concludes June 10, 2011. Daily schedule is 8am-5pm. Alternate schedules (including evenings and weekends) and alternate locations (for programs and various other activities) will apply, as needed. More specific daily activities include the following:

Monday to Thursday: 8:00am to 9:00am: Collaboration on the mc3 project to enhance cross-curricular communication

Monday to Thursday: 9:30am to 3:30pm: GCE Learning Unit Instruction and/or preparation

Monday to Thursday: 1:15pm to 1:30pm Team-building or mindfulness activity

Fridays: 9:30 to 10:55; 11AM-3:30PM Field Experience preparation; Field Experience activities

Essential Qualifications

Teaching experience and interest in alternative methods of education

Resources

The IMSI salary shall be between $32,000 and $40,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. Job Status: Full-Time Salaried, Exempt. A $100 monthly health insurance stipend will be allotted; thirty-percent of the MSIs mobile phone expense will be reimbursed (up to $30/month); and organic lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday. The IMSI is also encouraged to participate in GCEs Health/Wellness activities with the students M-Th from 3:30-5pm.
