Web Developer Science of Marine Reserves Project

Position Summary: The Contractor will serve as the Web Developer for the European Marine Reserve Science Project coordinated by the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). This is a personal contract position funded by Natural England. The Web Developer will organize, implement, and maintain the web-based tools for a European version of the second edition of “The Science of Marine Reserves” booklet, which will include interactive data visualization tools for the European case studies and other regional information. This will require working with the PISCO Science of Marine Reserves design team to develop new interactive graphic elements for the Google Earth MPA Layer as well as the European Science of Marine Reserves content to be hosted on IUCN WCPA’s Protect Planet Ocean site (http://www.protectplanetocean.org/). These tools will be executed using new Rich Internet Application (RIA) technologies such as Flex, Ajax, and Google Earth mapping tools. The Web Developer will also be responsible for maintaining and trouble-shooting existing Science of Marine Reserves data visualization tools currently hosted online at the Protect Planet Ocean site and at www.piscoweb.org/outreach/pubs/reserves. The Web Developer will work remotely with a team of individuals located at Oregon State University and University of California, Santa Barbara.

Position Description

The Senior Research Programmer will work as part of a close-knit team of content experts, artists, cognitive scientists and measurement experts to quickly build applications that have immediate and significant value to students and teachers and to the larger education community. In particular, this position will support ongoing research and development efforts within the program focused on the creating suites of online simulation-based science assessments at various grade levels and in a new project to integrate assessments of student learning into a virtual chemistry lab. The Senior Research Programmer will work with researchers to ensure successful deployment of the applications for field-based research. The position will support future projects as they are funded and, as necessary, will recruit and supervise additional developers under consultant contracts. 
The position will be located in either our Redwood City, CA or Oakland, CA Office. 
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with WestEd’s STEM staff to gain a strong understanding of the problem domain, to analyze and propose innovative solutions and best approaches, and to build and iteratively refine the applications.

Integrated Math-Science Instructor (IMSI) (Irving & Broadway)

Purpose

Teach a range of integrated mathematics and science courses that are contextualized historically and ecologically, and that represent a range of discoveries, innovations, and societal shifts. Courses must challenge students to reconsider what they believe they know about math and science in particular and the world in general. Specifically, the IMSI is expected to help communicate mathematics and science as living and evolving languages for and perspectives on building civilization’s infrastructures. Responsibilities/Duties

IMSI areas of responsibility directly reflect the GCE Community Fabric (http://www.globalcitizenshipexperience.com/GCE-fabric.html), with specific duties related to the students, to the school, and to the community of partners. The student focus is developed through the creation and delivery of integrated math-science curriculum. The school focus is developed through the mc3 project, standing for Media Cross-Curricular Communication. The partner focus is cultivated by the Chicago Global Village project, a series of field experience activities throughout Chicago.

The IMSI salary shall be between $32,000 and $40,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. Job Status: Full-Time Salaried, Exempt. A $100 monthly health insurance stipend will be allotted; thirty-percent of the MSI’s mobile phone expense will be reimbursed (up to $30/month); and organic lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday. The Role

Requirements: A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or IT and at least 6 months of project or internship web/software development experience utilizing JavaScript (or HTML) and some Java (or C++). Any J2EE, Swing/GUI, or database experience, as well as knowledge of distributed computing or HTTP would be a plus.
